Cross-Country Ski with Wild Montana to Pike Creek

March 19, 9:00 am - 4:00 pm

Join the Glacier-Two Medicine Alliance and Wild Montana for a backcountry ski adventure in the Badger-Two Medicine.

Join the Glacier-Two Medicine Alliance and Wild Montana for a backcountry ski adventure in the Badger-Two Medicine. We plan to ski a loop from the Marias Pass parking area through the Pike Creek drainage, with the exact route dependent on snow conditions. The route will include some moderate grade ascents and descents, with great views of the surrounding mountains. We’ll look for wildlife tracks, especially wolverine and lynx, learn a bit about winter ecology, and discuss current challenges related to the management and long-term protection of this wild and sacred place. Participants should be intermediate to advanced skiers and must provide their own gear.

Meeting Option #1Starbucks, Columbia Falls corner of US 2 & 206 @ 7:45 am
Meeting Option #2Marias Pass @ 9am
  • If the parking area at Marias Pass is plowed in, there’s ample parking on the north side of the highway.
What to Bring – Your own skiing equipment (skis, poles, boots); warm layers + rain gear; lunch + snacks + plenty of drinking water; backpack to carry it all in.
Weather Forecast – It’s going to be warm all weekend and forecasted to be so on Tuesday as well. Here’s a link to the forecast. The snow will likely be icy to start and then slow and sloppy after warming up. I recommend everyone come with waxed skis and an open minded approach to how far we make it. Either way we’ll enjoy one another’s company and being outside.
Day’s Plan – Our intentions are to ski up the Pike Creek Drainage from the Marias Pass parking area and make a loop or out and back to our vehicles. We’ll ski somewhere in the range of 5 – 8 miles. Conditions are going to be variable so we’ll adapt our route based on what we see. I’d expect we’ll be back to vehicles no later than 3 pm.
