Helen will discuss the Blackfeet Nation’s visionary bison restoration program.

Helen Augare Carlson Mamiatsikimiiaki-Magpie Woman is an enrolled member of the Ampsakapii Pikanii Blackfeet Tribe. She was born and raised on the Blackfeet Nation in Northern Montana. She is the wife of Sheldon Carlson. They are proud parents and grandparents. Her family are tied to the Two Medicine River Valley where they enjoy time spent caretaking a small private herd of bison. She attended the Browning Public Schools, Blackfeet Community College, and Montana State University in Bozeman, Montana. In 2000, she completed a Bachelors’ of Science at the University of Montana in Business Administration with emphasis in Management and Information Systems. Helen began her career in STEM education reform as the director of the Rural Systemic Initiative project at Blackfeet Community College in 2000. She co-founded the Native Science Field Center at Blackfeet Community in 2004. She has dedicated her 23 year career to institutional development, education reform, and developing informal science education programming. She is committed to increasing the participation of Native American youth K-12, tribal college students, community, and educators in culturally-responsive STEM throughout the Northern Rockies and Plains. Helen is currently the Title III Director in the Institutional Development Department at Blackfeet Community College. She was recently appointed Piikani Studies Division Chair and completed a Master’s of Education Research Certificate in the Niisitapiisinni program at the University of Calgary. She is a student of the Niistipowahsinni language and a devoted advocate of IINNII relatives.
