Anthropologist Sally Thompson received her Ph.D. at the Univ. of Colorado in 1980, the same year she moved to Missoula to start the archaeology program at Historical Research Associates. In time, she shifted her focus to consulting and collaborating with Native communities including Taos Pueblo, the Blackfeet Tribe, the Confederated Salish & Kootenai Tribes. As director of the Regional Learning Project at UM, (2001-2010) she worked with tribes along the trails followed by Lewis & Clark to develop curriculum resources on history, geography and culture. As NAGPRA coordinator for UM (2011-2014), she undertook the most difficult work of her career to repatriate human remains back to their communities. She is the author of People Before the Park (2015), Disturbing the Sleeping Buffalo: 23 Unexpected Stories that Awaken Montana’s Past (2024) and Black Robes Enter Coyote’s World: Chief Charlo and Father De Smet in the Rocky Mountains (2024).
