As the locals know, Highway US-2 at the western entrance to Bad Rock Canyon is a dangerous place for both wildlife and motorists. In fact, it has one of the highest rates of wildlife-vehicle collisions in western Montana.
The Montana Department of Transportation (MDT) is finally moving ahead, after decades of study and delays, with developing a redesign of the highway through Bad Rock Canyon. This provides a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to build a wildlife crossing structure for animals moving in and out of the Bad Rock Canyon Wildlife Management Area, along with a dedicated bike lane to complete the Gateway-to-Glacier bike path, both of which are sorely needed to improve safe passage for wildlife and people on this dangerous stretch of highway.
PETITION
Please add your name to the list of organizations and individuals who support a wildlife crossing structure and bike path at the mouth of Bad Rock Canyon.
Let’s not miss this unique opportunity to have a wildlife crossing and bike path included in the redesign plans.
Widening the highway will help improve motorist safety, but without exclusionary fencing, a dedicated bike lane, and a wildlife crossing structure, cyclists will remain in harm's way, and wildlife-vehicle collisions will continue to kill or injure wildlife and people.
And because this location is part of a wildlife corridor along the Whitefish and Swan mountain ranges, a crossing structure would maintain habitat connectivity for big game species like deer and elk, as well as sensitive and threatened species like lynx, wolverine and grizzly bears.
Please support a Gateway to Glacier Wildlife Crossing at Bad Rock Canyon.
